The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Allison Jones Rushing of North Carolina to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Rushing's confirmation fills a vacancy created by Judge Allyson K. Duncan's assumption of senior status upon confirmation of her successor.
Rushing was in private practice in Washington, D.C. from 2009-2010 and 2011-2019. Following law school, Rushing served as a law clerk to then-Judge Neil M. Gorsuch on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, then-Chief Judge David B. Sentelle on the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and Justice Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court of the United States. Rushing earned her B.A., summa cum laude, from Wake Forest University and her J.D., magna cum laude, from Duke University School of Law, where she served as executive editor of the Duke Law Journal.
The Fourth Circuit hears appeals from the nine federal district courts in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina and from federal administrative agencies.
